Burial

Prepare My Placenta

When you decide to honour your placenta with a burial, it becomes a ritual for you and your family. Whether it's as straight-forward as utilising it as fertiliser, or made into a ceremony or significant event, your placenta ritual deserves your placenta prepared lovingly and beautifully for you.

When you have a special place in mind, or aren't sure you've found it yet, preserving your placenta for burial at a later date can alleviate some of the hurry and worry about giving your placenta to the earth. I offer two options for preservation, however only one is suitable to fly or transport without a freezer.

The first option is to dehydrate your placenta, with the sac wrapped behind, and the cord exposed in a heart on top; with or without herbs of your provision, or chamomile and lavender sprinkled all over. I then wrap your placenta in paper and tie off with raffia. This way, the whole parcel can be buried if you choose to keep it wrapped.

The second option is to take your placenta, thaw it if necessary, and freeze with the sac wrapped behind, and the cord displayed in a heart shape; with or without herbs of your provision, or chamomile and lavender sprinkled all over. After it is frozen I wrap in paper and tie with raffia, adding some paper towel inside the wrapping, underneath the placenta in case of thawing. This paper towel will not save a freezer power outage, but it will aide on the walk to the ritual site/garden. The burial parcel is then placed into a snap lock bag for protection.

It is said, that the powers of the placenta are very strong, vegetables, fruit trees and natives, will be most happy if you compost your placenta before using it, maximising its area of benefit, or plant it away a little.

Your umbilical cord can be removed from the placenta and dehydrated separately to keep or for a bespoke cord keepsake, have a look at this option here.
